Welcome to Performing Arts at Troy Howard Middle School
You are now entering the Third Space

Hello parents and students! I am very excited to be teaching Performing Arts to the 7th and 8th graders at Troy Howard Middle School. Some of you may remember me as the Language Arts teacher on the Ecology Academy for the past three years. I look forward to a fun and busy trimester with your children, guiding them as they explore the world of performing arts, particularly theater.

As President Obama said in a recent speech, “Educating the whole child through the study of art, music, dance, theater, and all the humanities, cannot end. They must all be combined into a form of education that appeals to every student, helping them find a place to excel – whether it be in the classroom, on the playing field, or in the orchestra. Educating the whole child will create a generation that is better at creativity and innovation; better at communication; and, better at being citizens of this country and the world at-large.â€

The Performing Arts Standards, taken from the Maine Learning Results:
  • Students show literacy of the elements of theater
  • Students apply skills in acting, directing, designing, and scriptwriting to create formal and informal theater.
  • Students analyze theater in past and present cultures.
  • Students critique and derive meaning from works of theater.
  • Students approach artistic problem-solving using multiple solutions and the creative process.
  • Here are some of the activities we may work on :
  • Mask making
  • Mime, Pantomime, Clowning
  • Puppetry
  • Filmmaking
  • Set/Costume/Lighting Designs
  • A word about ‘performing’ in the class - In performing arts class students will receive an overview of many different elements of theater. One element is performing. I know some kids are nervous about ‘performing’ in front of their peers. There will be very little performing in class. If students are truly interested in performance, I would recommend joining the drama club.
